Ayurveda, often called the “Science of Life,” is an ancient holistic system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Here’s an introduction to Ayurveda:
- Philosophical Foundation:
- Ayurveda is based on the principles of interconnectedness between the body, mind, and spirit. It views health as a state of balance among bodily energies (doshas), proper digestion and metabolism (agni), and the elimination of toxins (ama).
- Fundamental Principles:
- Tridosha Theory: Ayurveda recognizes three fundamental energies or doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—that govern physiological and psychological functions. Each person has a unique constitution (prakriti) determined by the predominance of these doshas.
- Panchamahabhutas: Ayurveda categorizes all matter, including the human body, into five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether (space). These elements combine in different proportions to form the doshas and influence bodily functions.
