Yantras are geometric diagrams used in the Indian spiritual and ritual tradition. They are often used for meditation and as tools to focus the mind and invoke specific deities or energies. The evolution of yantras is closely tied to the development of Hindu and Tantric practices.
- Early Vedic Period: In the early Vedic period (1500–500 BCE), yantras were rudimentary and mainly used in fire rituals (yajnas). They were simple geometric patterns drawn on the ground or on vessels used for rituals.
- Upanishadic Period: During the Upanishadic period (800–200 BCE), the focus shifted to more internalized spiritual practices. Yantras became more symbolic and complex, representing various aspects of the cosmos and deities.
