Aştānga Samgraha was composed by Vägbhața, the name “Astänga Samgraha” itself implies that it is a Samgraha (compendium). Vägbhața explains the need for writing his book “Astanga Samgraha” states (A. Sangraha Sü 1/15-22) that no one tantra was enough to give entire knowledge about all the diseases, one has to spend a total life in studying all the treatises, which were comprising of repeated topics in them. In some of the treatises, the topics were written either very concisely or with too elaboration, and also given much importance to their concerned speciality”. He further says that his text “Astanga samgraha” is the collection of all the important information available in all the treatises, it is devoid of all the irrelevant, elaborate, contraversial statements and repetitions, and dispells the controversies of other texts, and also gives much importance to käyacikitsä”. It is an encyclopedic compendium of all the eight specialised branches of Ayurveda namely Käyacikitsa (general medicine), Bālacikitsā (paediatrics), Graha cikitsa (demonology) Śālākya tantra (treatment of the diseases eyes, ear nose and throat), Visa cikitsā (toxicology), Jara cikitsā or Rasayana cikitsā (rejuvenation), 8. Vrsa cikitsā (virilification therapy). Astanga Samgraha text consists of 150 chapters divided into 6 sthānas as follows:
