Fundamental Principles of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. The word “Ayurveda” is derived from the Sanskrit words “Ayur” (life) and “Veda” (science or knowledge). It is often referred to as the “science of life.” The fundamental principles of Ayurveda are rooted in the holistic understanding of health and wellness, emphasizing balance in bodily systems and alignment with nature. Here are the key principles:
- The Five Elements (Panchamahabhuta):
- Ether (Akasha): Represents space.
- Air (Vayu): Represents movement and breath.
- Fire (Tejas/Agni): Represents transformation and metabolism.
- Water (Jala/Aap): Represents cohesion and fluidity.
- Earth (Prithvi): Represents solidity and structure.
These elements combine in various ways to form the three doshas.
