- Early Vedic Period: In the early Vedic period (1500–500 BCE), yantras were rudimentary and mainly used in fire rituals (yajnas). They were simple geometric patterns drawn on the ground or on vessels used for rituals.
- Upanishadic Period: During the Upanishadic period (800–200 BCE), the focus shifted to more internalized spiritual practices. Yantras became more symbolic and complex, representing various aspects of the cosmos and deities.
